Basal Breast Cancer: A Complex and Deadly Molecular Subtype
نویسندگان
چکیده
During the last decade, gene expression profiling of breast cancer has revealed the existence of five molecular subtypes and allowed the establishment of a new classification. The basal subtype, which represents 15-25% of cases, is characterized by an expression profile similar to that of myoepithelial normal mammary cells. Basal tumors are frequently assimilated to triple-negative (TN) breast cancers. They display epidemiological and clinico-pathological features distinct from other subtypes. Their pattern of relapse is characterized by frequent and early relapses and visceral locations. Despite a relative sensitivity to chemotherapy, the prognosis is poor. Recent characterization of their molecular features, such as the dysfunction of the BRCA1 pathway or the frequent expression of EGFR, provides opportunities for optimizing the systemic treatment. Several clinical trials dedicated to basal or TN tumors are testing cytotoxic agents and/or molecularly targeted therapies. This review summarizes the current state of knowledge of this aggressive and hard-to-treat subtype of breast cancer.

Future of Triple Negative Breast Cancer: Can Immunotherapy Treat This Deadly Subtype of Breast Cancer?
Triple negative breast cancer (TNBC): challenges and solutions via the immune cells TNBC is one of the most complicated types of breast cancer to treat. It is generally diagnosed based on the absence of three receptors: estrogen, progesterone, and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) and is thus defined as a triple negative. TNBC is often more aggressive with lower survival rates...

This review deals with studies that have used cDNA microarrays and immunohistochemistry to identify a subtype of breast carcinoma recently known as “basal-like” carcinoma. The key breast carcinoma studies are critically discussed to highlight methodological problems in cohort selection, definitions, interpretation of results, an...

Background & Aims: Breast cancer is the most prevalent malignancy in women. A few articles describe a marked decrease in the levels of ferroportin in breast cancer cells. The presented results demonstrate convincingly the incredible diagnostic and prognostic value of ferroportin expression in breast cancer and suggest that determination of this molecular marker maybe used as guidance toward ind...

متن کاملThe Characterization of Cell Line Crl-2335 as a Basal-Like Breast Carcinoma Model
Basal-like breast cancer has been reported to be the most aggressive and deadly carcinoma sub-type. Patients diagnosed with this subtype have a less than 50% five-year survival. In addition, many studies have reported that this sub-type is more prevalent in specific ethnic groups and is believed to be a key factor that drives certain ethnic disparities in mortality. In order to effectively stud...
